How Craniosacral Therapy Helps Stabilize Mood Swings

People experience a wide range of emotions within minutes. It's not uncommon for people to feel happy one moment, then feel depressed or angry in another. This range of emotions is called "mood swings" and has several different causes.

Stress And Depression

Those in a constant state of anxiety or stress can cause a shift in mood. Those who suffer from continuous stress from home or work life can have a hard time regulating mood. Stress can also affect the amount of sleep a person gets a night. Not getting enough sleep can make stress worse. When the body doesn't get enough high-quality rest at night, then it can worsen stress. It's an almost endless cycle that can feel impossible to break.

Depression is another mental health issue that carries mood swings as a symptom. Chemical imbalances cause depression in the brain. It's not just a state of being sad. Different stressors in life, from environmental stressors to work, can cause an overwhelming imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain that regulate mood. If depression isn't treated, it could lead to more than mood swings. Depression also causes a loss of libido (sexual drive), irritability, digestive issues, or changes in sleep patterns. All of these issues can also lead to mood swings. It's a brutal cycle. However, chemical imbalances aren't the only imbalance that can lead to mood swings. Hormonal imbalances can lead to hormonal imbalances as well.

Hormonal Imbalances

Shifts in hormones can affect the brain’s chemistry. Hormonal changes can range from a teenager experiencing puberty to a woman going through a pregnancy or menopause. Women in particular experience more mood swings than men due to their ovaries and the different processes their body’s experience over their lifetime.

Several systems accompany premenstrual syndrome (or PMS) from fatigue to bloating, but the symptom most associated with PMS are mood swings. When there's an imbalance in estrogen is caused during the PMS cycle, it can worsen mood and behavior.

Mood swings caused by hormonal imbalance is also present in pregnant women. Estrogen and progesterone can significantly affect the neurotransmitters in the brain that manage mood. These mood swings are worse during pregnancy as the body is not used to such drastic changes in hormones. That's because estrogen affects serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps regulate emotion. However, an imbalance in the serotonin neurotransmitter can cause irritability and other mood imbalances. Morning sickness and other emotional distress can exacerbate mood swings during pregnancy, as well.

However, women aren't the only ones who suffer mood swings with hormone changes. Both males and females experience mood swings when they go through puberty. Boys can experience a wide range of emotions over their changing bodies. Puberty can cause depression, anxiety, confusion, irritability, and other feelings that can fluctuate as hormones change. Unfortunately, it's difficult to express these emotions, and people end up repressing them over time. This can cause emotions to get trapped in tissues.

Trapped Emotions In Tissues

Emotions trapped in the body's tissues are caused by burying (or repressing) negative emotions. Continuing to hide emotional pain as we age can cause everything from chronic back pain to headaches. All the unresolved grief ends up getting trapped in our tissues. Emotions being caught in the tissues is not a new concept. Trapped emotions have been for centuries, from Asia to Europe. It's essential to find a way to release all the painful emotions trapped in the body, and craniosacral therapy is one of the best ways to achieve this.

Craniosacral Therapy For Mood Swings And  Releasing Trapped Emotions

Craniosacral therapy helps release the emotions trapped in the body's tissues. Traditional medicine is not as effective for releasing trapped emotions. It takes specialized therapy with the right hands-on non-invasive treatment to help release stuck energy. Craniosacral therapy is a form of emotional release bodywork that moves the emotion through blockages and out its natural exits. However, the release of emotions, especially ones stored over the years, can cause different reactions.

Fortunately, the gentle touch of a practiced craniosacral therapist can make it a smooth and comfortable process mentally, emotionally, and physically.
